About Great Barrier Reef Aquarium

The National Education Centre for the Great Barrier Reef, known as the Great Barrier Reef Aquarium, has been a prominent fixture since its establishment in 1987 by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority. Apart from presenting the Authority’s initiatives, research, and educational programs, the aquarium has also greatly benefited the Townsville community through employment opportunities, education, and tourism. With over four million visitors and a substantial online presence, the Great Barrier Reef Aquarium plays a crucial role in the region’s economy and tourism sector.

Dr Graeme Kelleher, a former Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA) chairman, had the initial vision for Reef HQ. His main goal was to bring the marine environment to the public and encourage their involvement in reef conservation. Originally named Great Barrier Reef Aquarium, Reef HQ opened on 14 June 1987. It was later renamed ‘ReefHQ’ in 1999 and then changed back to its original name in 2009. However, in 2021, the decision was made to demolish the aquarium and construct a new one on the same site, which is expected to be completed by 2026. Meanwhile, most of the aquarium’s inhabitants have been relocated to other public aquariums and facilities.

Reef HQ Aquarium, the world’s largest living coral reef aquarium, is the Australian Government’s national education centre for the Great Barrier Reef.
