About Strand Park

Located in the suburb of North Ward, The Strand Park is a picturesque seaside foreshore in Townsville, Australia. With stunning views of the Port of Townsville, Magnetic Island, and Cape Cleveland, this area offers a range of attractions. These include a jetty, a recreational park, and various dining options such as restaurants and cafes. Additionally, visitors can enjoy the pools available in this vibrant area. Since Townsville was established in the mid-19th century, The Strand has played a significant role in its history. Initially, public outdoor swimming baths were constructed between 1886 and 1889. They were constantly replenished by tidal actions and had a depth of 6-8 feet.

Eventually, the ‘City Baths’ were developed on the same site. Later on, the ‘Tobruk Memorial Baths’ were built between 1941 and 1950, honouring those who fought in the 1941 Siege of Tobruk. Military fortifications were also established at Kissing Point in 1891, and Jezzine Barracks, located there, was transformed into the Army Museum of North Queensland after its closure in 2007. The Pioneer Women’s Memorial Building and five seaside huts were constructed in 1929 by a branch of the Queensland Country Women’s Association on Mitchell Street, Kissing Point. The building included a swimming enclosure that aimed to be ‘sharkproof’ but required occasional repairs. Tragically, many shark-related fatalities occurred over the years on The Strand, with the first recorded incident in November 1916 at Kissing Point. Another fatality occurred the following morning nearby, and in September 1918, there was a fatal attack in 30 inches of water near the Sea View Hotel. In January 1933, another fatality occurred about 200 yards from Kissing Point, and in October 1951, a reported fatal mauling took place beside the Kissing Point Baths swimming enclosure.
